Community activist Andrew Deppe and Bob Schwartz, of the Gay Liberation Network, (above) were among a few dozen anti-war protesters outside Horace Greeley Elementary School in Lakeview Jan. 7 as President Bush toured the North Side school to tout his No Child Left Behind program. Schwartz said that with the 2008 presidential election heating up, politicians have been getting too quiet on the subject of Iraq. “The Republicans…are all still supportive of President Bush’s policies and the Democrats want to talk about anything but Iraq,” Schwartz said. “We’re here to remind people that the war for the U.S. Empire is still on.” Deppe added, “I came out here because I’d feel worse if I didn’t. This isn’t like Germany in the 1930s—there are still people who want to come out and protest.” Besides his school visit, Bush also met with members of the planning committee for Chicago’s 2016 Olympic bid and spoke to business leaders at the Union League Club downtown.
