Olivia sits pretty.
Olivia, the home theater recliner from Salamander Designs, is a stylish debutant making her debut at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
She’s ergonomically designed and generously proportioned, with a seating surface measuring 23.5 inches wide.
But more than a lazy girl, Olivia can come equipped with a tactile sound transducer that allows the seated to feel the percussive dynamics of cinema sound tracks. The device mounts beneath the chair and connects to an entertainment system amplifier. It harnesses the same technology that makes flight simulators seem so realistic to pilots during their training. www.salamanderdesigns.com
Cooking queen: Diva de Provence breaks new ground with the Diva 365, a revolutionary new induction range that became available this past fall. The 36-inch stainless steel professional range is an industry first, combining an all-electric convection self-cleaning oven with a five-burner induction cooktop. The professionally styled range features five cooking zones on the top, including one large 4,000-watt center burner and two 3,000-watt side burners. The oven boasts a 3,500-watt bake and broil element and the fastest self-cleaning element in the industry. www.divainduction.com
Mod-maker: Furniture in a smaller house or apartment must often perform double duty to get the most out of a small space. Wonk’s Mod Quad is a coffee table with flip-ups to hide clutter and get extra storage space. The thick shelves in Wonk’s Hamilton cleverly conceal hidden storage space. The Halsey hides away drawers for extra storage. www.wonknyc.com
Steam clean: With a steam generator, the Mr. Steam Spa Package provides a spa-like experience in the home bath. The Chromasteam System infuses an array of mood elevating colors into the steam room—from soothing shades of blue and green to energizing colors like orange and red. Moisture resistant music therapy speakers enhance the steambath experience, providing music from almost any audio source. www.mrsteam.com
Toilet matters: Istanbul, the physical and spiritual home of VitrA, is the inspiration for a complete bathroom experience. Designer Ross Lovegrove’s Istanbul Collection for VitrA features products that flow together to create a single language in bathroom design. For VitrA the bathroom has changed its vocation; no longer a secondary space, but rather a cult place, a recess where rationality and efficiency complement the spirit and the warmth of pampering one’s body. More than 175 products have been created within the collection: a selection of freestanding and wall hung toilets, washbasins, faucets, tiles and ceramics, showerheads and a range of accessories.
VitrA also has introduced a second bathroom collection designed by Lovegrove. They called it Mod to exemplify Lovegrove’s contemporary design style in today’s modernized world. A client who requested a vital, clean bathroom solution inspired Mod, which economizes on space, material and water. www.vitra-usa.com
Did you know that old, inefficient toilets are responsible for most of the water wasted in U.S. homes? The American Standard FloWise can reduce water usage by more than 20 percent and has won the right to wear the EPA’s WaterSense label reserved for high-efficiency toilets.
American Standard’s FloWise showerheads also conserve water, the key in their construction being a small turbine-like mechanism that spins the water stream through the head to create a powerful spray. www.americanstandard-us.com
Bright ideas: Looking for an idea for that room that’s just never felt right? “The House that Faux Built: Transform Your Home with Paint Plasters and Creativity” by Adrienne van Dooren may help. More than 100 artists donated time and effort to help transform rooms and create the book, which raises money for Habitat for Humanity, animal rescue and survivors of Hurricane Katrina. www.fauxhouse.com
