Vibes: LCD

You know how it feels when you are dancing to a song that is firing on all cylinders and you are caught up in the beats and rhythm and melody and you can’t help but smile—a big, hot grin, stretching from ear to ringing ear? What if you heard a song that also made you laugh out loud? That’s something to consider when listening to “Sound of Silver” (Capitol), the most recent album by LCD Soundsystem. When you hear the title track, with the lyrics, “Sound of silver talk to me/make you want to feel like a teenager/until you remember the feelings of/a real live emotional teenager/then you think again,” see if you can resist the urge to punctuate your dance moves with a chuckle or two. This is seriously funny stuff, which in no way diminishes LCD Soundsystem’s ability to demonstrate their trademark dance music technique. Listen (and shake your limbs) as they revive late-1970s style Bowie on “Get Innocuous!” or Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark on “Someone Great,” as well as create a soundtrack for the politics of dancing in the cowbell-propelled “Us V. Them” and the electro jolt of “North American Scum.”
Relying on somewhat more organic instrumentation, !!! essentially picks up where they left off on the excellent “Louden Up Now” with their latest release “Myth Takes” (Warp). Echoes of the Talking Heads that can be heard in “All of My Heroes are Weirdos” may inspire some to do their best imitations of David Byrne. The real booty-smacking dance party comes next on “Must Be The Moon,” which is so sexy it should come with its own supply of condoms and lube. “A New Name” sounds like the kind of dance track that The Clash crafted circa “Sandinista,” and “Heart of Hearts” is a dance-floor coronary just waiting to happen—and that’s a compliment! Hold a mirror up to the stomping “Yadnus,” and you’ll find out that it’s not only breathing, and breathing hard, but that it’s Sunday spelled backwards, while the near-epic “Bend Over Beethoven” clearly rocks the hardest.
LCD Soundsystem and !!! are among the numerous acts playing Lollapalooza, Aug. 3-5, in Grant Park.
