Incumbent Joseph Berrios held onto his seat on the Cook County Board of Review in Tuesday’s election after receiving 58 percent of the vote.
Berrios’ opponent, openly gay Lincoln Park attorney Jay Paul Deratany, said he would work toward a fairer taxation system in Cook County, keeping property taxes low and ensuring that monies collected would be distributed more evenly.
Berrios, who is head of the Cook County Democratic Party, promised taxpayers a more streamlined and efficient system to handle property tax appeals.
The race pitted Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), a Berrios supporter, against Cook County Assessor James Houlihan (D), who bankrolled Deratany. Houlihan and Madigan have feuded over property tax assessments.
