UI cancer program targets lesbians

University of Illinois Extension announced Feb. 5 a program expanding access to breast cancer education for women in Cook County.

The program, “On the Road to Breast Cancer Prevention,” offers sessions targeted specifically to the lesbian community, according to Sonia Lopez, community health educator for University of Illinois Extension.

“There are some (factors) that put lesbians at higher risk for breast cancer,” said Lopez. “For example, they sometimes get OB/GYN care less frequently than other women.”

The program, offered in four sessions, is available through community agencies. Among the topics discussed are risk factors associated with breast cancer, self-breast examinations, signs and symptoms, mammography and testimonials from breast cancer survivors.

Lopez also said that participants would be asked to sign contracts pledging to set up a plan to care for their health.

Programs have also been developed that target Latinas, African American women and teenagers, according to Lopez.

“We’re trying to cover every woman in Illinois,” she said.
