Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown, Rep. Constance “Connie” Howard (D-Chicago), and Alds. Toni Preckwinkle (4th), Rey Colon (35th) and Walter Burnett, Jr. (27th) met last week with members of the Youth Pride Center, 637 S. Dearborn St.

The meetings were part of YPC’s program to educate GLBT youth and youth of color about the political process.

“Most of our youth come from populations who don’t traditionally come out to vote,” said Meggan Green, YPC communications director. “Most of them are still a little unsure of how politics work in the city.”

A campaign to get eligible voters registered is currently underway at YPC. But Green said the campaign is also focused on making all YPC members, even those not yet of voting age, aware of political processes and events that affect their lives.

YPC’s program encourages members to find out who their alderman is, for example, and find out what the various responsibilities of politicians are.

Green said that once the program began, “I was pleased to notice that many of our youth were taking the time to find out who their alderman were.”

She also said that some of the youth are going to be accompanying YPC officials to this year’s Democratic National Convention in Las Vegas.
