1983: The Top 10 popular hits from DJ Tom Parks at BJ’s, 3231 N. Clark St., are 1) “That’s Good” by Devo; 2) “You Can’t Hide Your Love” by David Joseph; 3) “Der Kommisar” by A.T.F/Falco/Suzy Andrews; 4) “Plastic Doll” by Dharma; 5) “Thriller (All Cuts)” by Michael Jackson; 6) “Games Above My Head” by Blancmange; 7) “Blue Monday” by New Order; 8) “Weekend” by Class Action/Phreak; 9) “All I Need (All Cuts)” by Sylvester; and 10) “M.B.O. Theme” by Klein and M.B.O.
San Francisco-born Disco singer Paul Parker appears at the Paradise, 2848 N. Broadway. His hits include “Right on Target” and “Shot in the Dark,” both written by ace producer Patrick Cowley.
John Boswell, the award-winning historian and author of “Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality,” is among the speakers at a three-day conference on “Perceptions of Gender: Masculine and Feminine in the Study of Religion” at the University of Chicago.
1989: The New Art Examiner magazine and Chicago New Art Association present Susan Sontag for a public lecture on her books “Illness as Metaphor” and “AIDS and Its Metaphors” at the Arthur Rubloff Auditorium at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Chicago 35, a social group for lesbians 35 and older, hosts a dance for women at Ann Sather’s restaurant, 929 W. Belmont, with music by women’s band Fantasy. Tickets are $5.
A two-day conference entitled “Affirming Gays and Lesbians in Religious Life” begins at the Meadville/Lombard Theological Seminary at First Unitarian Church in Hyde Park at 57th and Woodlawn. A “Coming Out, Coming Together” service is held in the chapel and there are numerous lectures and seminars.
1991: Over 300 people demonstrate at the University of Chicago after an organization called “The Brotherhood of the Iron Fist” threatens three students. Tara Hardy, director of the Anti-Violence Project of Horizons Community Services, says, “In the atmosphere of intolerance that exists here at the University of Chicago, I am disheartened by the response of the administrators. I challenge the administration to listen to the gay, lesbian and bisexual students, and to implement their demands without question.”
1993: Events in the bars this week include an Easter Baskets & Bonnets Contest at Roscoe’s, 3354-56 N. Halsted; Berlin, 954 W. Belmont, plumbs the depths of bad taste with “More Horrible Hits” with DJ Bobby Marley; and “The Resurrection” at Vortex, 3631 N. Halsted, is where the dead not only walk but perform!!
2002: Commonbond serve up bluesy folk-rock from Washington, D.C. at Star Gaze, 5419 N. Clark St.
2005: Heartless Bitch Entertainment presents “F*CKGENDER” at Spin, 800 W. Belmont, featuring Andres de los Santos, Teena Angst, Stella, Sal Capone and many, many more.
The “I Want to Be Miss USA” contest is hosted by Dic Guhzinya and Crystal Fur at Crew, 4804 N. Broadway.
