Boys will be boys

Have you heard Junior Senior’s song “Hip Hop A Lula” on the Sears back-to- school fashions TV commercial? Did you think you were hallucinating when you first heard it? “Hip Hop A Lula” is the second track on “Hey Hey My My Yo Yo” (Rykodisc/Crunchy Frog), the eagerly awaited and somewhat delayed follow-up to their fabulous 2003 debut “D-D-Don’t Don’t Stop the Beat.”

Queer Senior (Jeppe Laursen) and straight Junior (Jesper Mortensen) haven’t lost their knack for getting the party started on the dance-floor or between the sheets, and are even joined by guest vocalists LeTigre on a few tracks. “Hip Hop A Lula” is a sexy romp that breaks it up and breaks it down with funk and finesse, and ranks among the “too much good stuff out there to ignore” that they sing about. “Can I Get Get Get” is a synthesized blast from the past with a retro rap spark and a bumping beat, while “Take My Time” (featuring guest vocals by Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson of the B52’s) sounds like the kind of 1980s dance music that was popular during Madonna’s early days. Just try not to clap (and dance) along to “We R The Handclaps” and forget about sitting still when “Dance, Chance, Romance” comes pouring out of the speakers. “Dance, Chance, Romance,” and the three songs that precede it—“I Like Music (W.O.S.B.),” “Ur A Girl,” “No No No’s,” also display Junior Senior’s fondness for retro pop sounds. The seven newly recorded songs on the bonus disc (U.S. edition only) rock a little harder, but don’t forsake Junior Senior’s dance origins, evident on the vintage Duran Duran-esque “Together for One Last Dance,” “I Can’t Rap, I Can’t Sing, But I Would Do Anything” and “Simple Minds Do Simple Things.”

Originally released in 1997 as a tribute to the late and beloved Princess Diana, the song “Flash” was Tim Cain of Boys’ Entrance’s salute to the misunderstood and tragic royal figure. In honor of the 10th anniversary of her passing “Flash” has been reissued as “Flash `07” (QEar Music), a seven-track maxi-single under the Boys’ Entrance moniker. Timmy Samuel’s production of the track fills out the body of the tune, making it as big and bright as a barrage of paparazzi flash bulbs. Cain sings, “Flash/in an instant/in a flash we’re not the same,” and that was certainly true when we lost Diana. The CD closes with a pair of versions the original `97 track. (www.boysentrance.com)

Three remixes of “Slut Buffet” from queer trio Shitting Glitter’s 2005 “Free Alongside Ship” are the focus of “Sidesaddle” (Decadrisco), a seven-song EP. “Mondo Di Corpo” from the aforementioned album is also included here alongside three new tracks—the naughty new wave of “Mustache Rides 5¢,” the dark “Delay” and the hypnotic “Trance Ego.” (www.shittingglitter.com)
