EVESHAM, N.J.—A video depicting same-sex parents will not be used as part of the third-grade curriculum this school year in Evesham, N.J.
The documentary titled “That’s a Family” was included in last year’s health curriculum to meet a state requirement on teaching diversity issues, but was pulled after some parents objected. School officials then formed a committee made up of parents, teachers and administrators to decide whether to use the video in future classes.
That panel recommended that the video be moved to the fourth-grade curriculum, but school board members rejected that proposal Aug. 30 and determined that the video would not be used this year.
The video, produced by a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization called Women’s Educational Media, shows children discussing the different types of families they come from, including homes led by single parents, adoptive parents and same-sex couples.
Opponents claimed the film violated their religious beliefs and that the students were too young to see this type of material, while supporters of the video said it helps children learn tolerance and respect for others.
