1976

Mattachine Midwest (MM) forms a group for both gay and straight people. It meets in the home of MM’s president Guy Warner to discuss the similarities and differences between being gay and being straight.

1982

In the clubs this week Hotter ‘n’ Hell presents “The Fireman’s Ball” at Paradise Island, 2848 N. Broadway, with DJs Lou di Vito and Jeff Berry; Disco Diva Sylvester appears live in person at the Ozone, 112-114 W. Hubbard; Tony Zito is at the piano at Annex 2, 430 N. Clark St.; and Lenore Allen and Tanya Richards present “Broadway’s Dream Girls,” starring Celeste, Donny, Angelique Amanda Lustrelle, Rachel Sonni Richards and Margaux Sommers, at Broadway Limited, 3132 N. Broadway.

1989

Circus Vargas and Strike Against AIDS present “Big Top,” an evening of circus magic at Navy Pier to benefit a variety of charities.

1992

Events at the bars this week include Rudy de la Mor at Gentry, 712 N. Rush St.; “A Full Moon Party” at AA Meat Market, 2933 N. Lincoln; “Labor Day Beach Balls BBQ” at Roscoe’s, 3356 N. Halsted; Shawn Christopher singing “Another Sleepless Night” and other hits at Vortex, 3631 N. Halsted; and the regular weekly Miss Ketty show at Hunger, 3336 N. Milwaukee.

1996

Charlie’s, 3726 N. Broadway, hosts a “Mr. Charlie’s Contest” and contestants compete by trying to collect the largest amount of money from bar patrons throughout the evening. The proceeds go to AIDS Walk Chicago.

Crowds gather at a boarded-up storefront at 4025 N. Sheridan for groundbreaking on a new $2.8 million state-of-the-art facility for the Howard Brown Health Center.

Impact and the Human Rights Campaign host their 8th Annual “Women’s Brunch” at the Francis J. Dewes Mansion, 503 W. Wrightwood. The special guest is Chastity Bono and the keynote speaker is Debra J. Glick, an openly lesbian New York state assemblywoman.

Social groups meeting this week include the Lambda Car Club, holding its fall show in the parking lot at Inn Exile, 5758 W. 65th St.; Chi-Town Squares square dance group at Ebenezar Church, 1650 W. Foster; The Euchre Club of Chicago at Big Chicks, 5024 N. Sheridan; and the Smelts swim team at Gill Park pool, 825 W. Sheridan.

1999

The Chicago Anti-Bashing Network picket and boycott Checkers restaurant across from the Town Hall District Police Station on Halsted Street after a gay man is attacked there and Checkers staff refuses to help.

2003

Windy City Gay Naturists are on a nude vacation at Camp Ronora in southwest Michigan.
