Crystal Lake teen sentenced
Staff and wire reports
WOODSTOCK, Ill.—A 16-year-old girl, one of two who distributed anti-gay fliers in their school parking lot in Crystal Lake, was sentenced to one year of probation Sept. 19.
McHenry County Juvenile Court Judge Michael Chmiel also sentenced the girl to 40 hours of community service. She would face 14 days in jail if she violates her probation.
The second girl was given a similar sentence last month.
Police arrested the two girls after they were caught placing fliers showing a picture of two boys kissing on cars in the school parking lot. The fliers contained inflammatory language and identified one of the boys as a fellow student at Crystal Lake South High School. The judge also ordered the girl to write letters of apology to the two boys and to the arresting officer.
Prosecutors dropped a felony hate-crime charge after the girls pleaded guilty to lesser misdemeanor charges.
