Arkansas group files new anti-gay initiative

LITTLE ROCK—The Arkansas attorney general’s office is reviewing a new ballot initiative proposal submitted Sept. 18 to put limits on who can foster and adopt children—a measure aimed at preventing gays and lesbians from adopting children.

The Arkansas Family Council submitted a proposed initiated act that would prohibit unmarried couples living together from adopting or fostering children. Attorney General Dustin McDaniel rejected the conservative group’s previous proposal earlier this month.

McDaniel must approve the language of the measures before supporters can collect signatures on petitions to place them on the November 2008 ballot.

The council earlier this year backed legislation that would ban gays and lesbians from adopting or fostering children. It failed in a legislative committee.
