California police department charged with bias in lawsuit

HAYWARD, Calif.—The Hayward Police Department is facing accusations of creating a hostile work environment for women and lesbians in a lawsuit filed by more than a dozen women against the city.

Thirteen current or former officers and civilian employees of the department say they suffered harassment or discrimination from male officers.

The suit filed in county court alleges that male officers consider policing “men’s work” and that women who made themselves “sexually available” were promoted.

Hayward assistant city attorney Daniel Connolly said his office had not yet reviewed the lawsuit and could not comment.
