Seattle GLBT community center may close by new year
SEATTLE—The Seattle Times reported Dec. 6 that the Seattle LGBT Community Center owes some $30,000 in unpaid bills and will likely not be able to keep its Capitol Hill office open beyond Dec. 31.
“(W)e’re looking at a few options right now, including sharing space with other community organizations,” said Breanna Anderson, co-president of the center’s board of directors.
The center staged last summer’s GLBT Pride march and festival in Seattle’s heavily gay Capitol Hill neighborhood after the event’s longtime sponsor, Seattle Out and Proud, outraged many in Seattle’s GLBT community by relocating its Pride events to downtown. That organization still owes more than $100,000 in unpaid bills, mostly to the city of Seattle.
The center’s executive director, Shannon Thomas, left the organization after the Pride events in June, telling the board she was “burned out.”
